What Are Head Lice?
Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp. They can be spread by close contact with other people. Head lice only live in hair and occasionally eyebrows and eyelashes.
Symptoms To Watch Out For
- Intense itching of the scalp.
- Small, red bumps on the scalp, neck, and shoulders (bumps may become crusty and ooze).
- Tiny golden or white tear drop shaped eggs/nits that are stuck to the hair shaft and have to be scraped off with finger nails or tweezers.
- Live lice on the scalp or hair may be difficult to see, unless the infestation is heavy. If you see something (a bug) moving, it's called a louse.

Lice Myths:
- Over-the-counter lice products are completely effective.
Actually, most are toxic pesticides with harsh chemicals and are useless against nits (lice eggs), nymphs (baby lice), and super lice.
- Having lice means you have poor hygiene.
Lice actually prefer clean hair.
- Lice can jump or fly.
Lice can only crawl. Most cases are contracted by direct head-to-head contact.
- Using hair products or chemically treated hair can not contract lice.
Lice live on the scalp not the hair and feed off human blood. Hair products will not prevent lice.
Facts About Lice:
- Some lice are resistant to over-the-counter treatment (SUPER LICE).
- Lice cannot survive off of the human head for more than 48 hours.
- Nits can not hatch off of the human head.
- Head lice is the top reason for school absences.
- Tea Tree oil does NOT repel against lice as effectively as a mint spray product.

What Can I Do?
- Collect all combs, brushes, and hair accessories in a zip lock bag, place in the freezer overnight.
- Clean your bed linens, clothes, jackets, hats, backpacks, stuffed animals, dolls, etc. Vacuum, or put aside in a bag for 3 days prior to using. Wash all bedding and clothing used within the last 24 hours in hot water. Pillows, comforters and stuffed toys can be placed in the dryer, on high for a minimum of 20 minutes.
- Vacuum floors and upholstered furniture in commonly used areas, do not forget about your car. Child car seats can either be lint rolled or vacuumed.
- Wipe down surfaces such as leather.
- Lice do not live on animals.
- Early detection is the most important step in the fight against lice, make monthly lice checks a part of your routine.
- Notify friends and family who may have come into contact. This includes school, camps, and daycare providers.

The Life Cycle of Lice
THE EGGAn egg, called “nit” is glued to the hair shaft where it stays for 8 to 10 days.
LICE NYMPHThe baby, called “nymph” hatches and molts three times over a period of 10 days, growing into an adult.
ADULT LICE10 days after hatching, the adult begins to reproduce and will lay anywhere from 50 to 300 eggs over the next 28 days.
